If you have ever had, or actually operate an online business you will know the need for traffic, traffic, traffic. Every where you look, everyone you talk to, they will all tell you to get as much traffic as possible to your site, by whatever means, in order to be successful. But does it always work?

If you are running an online business which is actually selling something or a service, then what you really need is focused traffic. Unless the traffic visiting your site is from the correct market then there is little chance of you increasing your income. There is a need for focused traffic in these situations, readers whom you know have an interest in your products, your services and your site. In the situation it is probably better to have less numbers, but more focused traffic.

However, if you site is for information only and you use the likes of Adsense for your income, then you can benefit in two ways from as much traffic as possible. If some of the people visiting your site end up not having an interest in what you have to offer, then there is a still a chance that they might click on one of your adverts – bringing income into your site.

On the other side of the coin, if they are interested in your site then assuming that your Adsense (or other online adverts) are focused onto your subject matter, there is also every chance that they will bring in advertising revenue.

Ideally you want traffic which is focused upon the subject of your site, but if you are buying a website based on traffic figures you should be aware that these can be doctored.

It is easy to pay a few dollars to one of these traffic sites, and receive thousands of visitors who will have no interest in your subject, or clicking on any of your adverts. This is often used by those looking to sell websites based on traffic. In this instance you should also base your decision to make an offer on the income which the site brings in – something which can often bear no relation to the traffic, and should ring alarms bells with you.

Over the last few years we have seen major growth in the website network area of business, with many webmasters looking to connect a vast array of sites where the subject matter is either similar or complimentary. While a number of online business people have been raving about the positive impact upon their income streams, do they really work? Is it something which you should consider?

While there is no doubt that those webmasters who are able to keep their traffic within a network, and circulate amongst their businesses can and do make better returns than stand alone sites, there are some factors to consider, including :-

· Connecting websites on the same IP address will impact upon your Page Rank status with Google - ensure they are all on different IPs.

· Ensure that there is sufficient bandwidth available to cover traffic which may be circulated more than once around the network.

· If a site is not profitable, or not forming part of an important link to others, you need to consider whether it should have a place in the network.

· Are your sites compatible with each other?

· Ultimately, is the network actually working?

If you structure your network correctly and ensure that the subject matter is complimentary there is no doubt that it could, and should work for you. However, it still boils down to the same old factor - traffic. Before you make big plans for a massive network, you should structure the increase in your network so that new sites are staggered, rather than hitting your visitors with a choice of numerous sites.

Let each site grow itself and attract traffic on a stand alone basis, because when you link them together the results could be startling if they all have a firm grounding in their own right.

Keeping It Fresh

Written by Admin in Online Business

For those of you with even the slightest of experience about online trading, you will no doubt have heard the term “Content is King”. In the ever changing world of online business you need to ensure you have the latest new, reviews and information on your site. You need to be able to attract the most visitors possible, but how can you do this?

Keeping your site fresh is one of the main ways to attract new and repeat traffic, giving them something that your competitors have not got, something that will actually interest them. Whether you are showing them the latest product, selling the latest gadget or giving them advice and information, old news is dead news. There is nothing worse than logging onto a site to find out dated information, out dated news and yesterday products,

You need to add regular content to your site to keep the search engines happy, to keep the spiders coming back for more, feeding them a constant diet of content. The more regular content that you can offer, the more chance of more visitors and hopefully more income for your site. It is also essential to keep your content focused to bring in relevant traffic, visitors who will actually be interested in the main focus of your site.

Many webmasters who are maybe not able to add regular content will actually pay someone to add it on their behalf, investing part of their income back into the site. This is a vital area for any successful site, and one which you will ignore at your peril!

While the internet is littered with sites which have been left high and dry, the dream for many can still go on, but you need to be nimble on your feet and able to adapt. A popular site from yesterday may not be as popular tomorrow, and may be dead the day after, which shows the ruthless streak which the internet has injected into the world of online business. Situations which may have taken weeks of months to develop offline can happen over night in cyberspace, offering the chance to be an overnight success, or an overnight failure. So how can you protect yourself and your business?

The best way to ensure that you are up there with the best, in line with the new trends and offering something which your readers want, is to :-

Keep a very close eye on your customers.

Be ready to change your product range to offer something new, something in demand and something which will attract traffic.

Learn how to read the markets, and do not fall into the trap of thinking that you are right and the markets are wrong. It wont be long before you realise otherwise!

Keep your pricing keen. Trying to screw that extra $1 out a customer may be the difference between a sale and someone “walking” away.

Do not be afraid to admit you were wrong, just take it in your stride and try to reposition yourself in the correct area of the market.

Don’t act because others are telling you what to do, listen to their comments, listen to their thoughts and then make up you own mind.

The internet moves many times quicker than the traditional offline markets, and you need to learn this from a very early stage. Do not be afraid to experiment, do not be frightened to try something different, and above all, do not be scared of admitting that you were wrong!

As the internet continues to grow, we are seeing the convergence of business and personal sites, with many of the more popular personal site owners now realising that there is money to be made, and traffic equals income. In order to stand any chance of being successful on the internet you need to decide whether you are in it for the money or not……

Some of the more popular sites on the internet have actually started off as personal sites, but quickly grown into more commercialised sites due to the power of the internet. There does come a cross over point when you need to decide if you are in it for the money, and if you do change to a more money orientated style, will it still work and will you be able to retain your readers?

Many people seem to believe that there is little difference running a personal site compared to a business site, but how wrong they are. The whole lookout, attitude and styles are totally different and you can often tell from a great distance whether a site is in it for the money. However, there is one dilemma when you have a successful personal site, if you don’t monetise your site then there is a good chance that someone else will either try to buy it or copy you - taking away some of your traffic and readers.

The internet can be a cruel world, and if your site does become popular you can bet your bottom dollar that there will be others who have spotted your niche market. While they say that copying someone’s work is one of the highest forms of flattery, it does not feel that way when all of your readers have gone on to pastures new!

As anyone who has looked at the likes of Sitepoint of Digitalpoint will know, the amount of turnkey sites available seems to have mushroomed over the last couple of years. We have now reached the situation where you have to ask if a turnkey site has any chance of making money!

For those not aware of the term turnkey site, this is a site which is not unique, a site which has many identical copies on the internet doing the same functions, with the same look, but just a different domain name. Turnkey sites have proved very popular amongst the newer additions to online business, the business leaders of tomorrow, but is it the best start to online trading?. To keep costs down its always best to find a cheap web hosting company so that you don’t spend precious pounds on unwanted hosting features.

While the fact that there are potentially thousands of copies of your site on the internet already is a disadvantage, you can still make money and be successful if you know how to market your site. Even though it would be preferable to have a unique design, a unique look to your site, it is still possible to make money with a simple turnkey site.

You can either go for a different area of a market, perhaps research a niche opening, or you can use the site as a feeder for a more lucrative site, or you can just buy as many relevant inward links as you can to increase traffic, and hopefully business. Turnkey sites can look very poor, but you can always adjust certain elements to try and differentiate yourself from the masses.

While it is possible to make money from turnkey sites, you may well gain a better reputation if your site is unique and you have actually been seen to invest time and money into it!
